Painting Updates, 12 December 2011
I had a little time on Sunday to work on paintings.
Diana – WIP 3
9″x12″ oil paint on canvas board
4 sessions
Unlike WIP3, this one is fairly color-true.
This layer I added very thin shading to the lighter parts of the skin, defining some details and adding warmth. I also added another layer of lighter green over most of the background, and defined the area that will be the shoulder straps of her shirt.
This is the color and style sample portrait for a series of much larger commissioned paintings. They are intended to match the color palette and style of family portraits she already has which were made the better part of a century ago. Unlike most modern portraits, the ones in her family have a very cool feel to them, with an olive toned background. However, I need to balance that coolness with warmth in the skin. To that end, the underpainting color is a dark, cool red.
Project: Diana Portrait
I added the orange on the cat.
Project: Complete Contentment

All of your work is just so beautiful!!
and the tutorials that I have read are so wonderfully descriptive and thought out..
I’d like to make a corset for myself.. but I’m not sure after a few days of searching where the best place (or even anyplace) would be to purchase coutille.. I could wear a corset everyday, so options for buying a lot would also be helpful..
thanks so much, on all fronts.. and I hope to frequent the site regularly now that I’ve found it
I’m glad I could be here to help you out. I am in the US, so if you are in a different region these links may not help you. The least expensive place to buy coutil in the USA is Tutu.Com, in the lining section. The link will take you directly to the correct page. Their coutil is not the highest quality so you’ll need to be careful of tears when grommeting, but it is strong, and at 1/3 the price of any other source I know it is far and away the best source while you are learning. Imported coutil from Britain or Germany will be much higher quality, but also much more expensive because of import costs. Richard the Thread sells the same quality of domestic coutil, but in a much greater range of colors. They also sell some British import coutil. Farthingales has the largest selection of coutil I know of, all of it high quality import. There are a couple other sources as well, but these are the three I use.
Thank you very much for these.. and I hope to be able to show you a corset soon into the new year.. as of now, the link above is my business webpage, I hope to expand and have a better page soon
Thanks again for all the wonderful information <3
