Snow Play (Wildlife Art)

Couple that with the fact that the edges of the tiger blend into the white snow, and I couldn't resist asking permission to draw it.

This drawing is an experiment in a couple of ways. I really love the effects I have been able to achieve in black paper, where the subject dissolves into the background. I want to get to where I can do the same thing on white paper. This isn't quite there, but it's honestly much harder with a light environment. We're accustomed to the idea that in darkness the entire figure may not be visible. In light, we expect to see everything.

The other experiment is a result of a new paper I found. It's 100% polypropylene, and therefor 100% archival. It's also the most perfectly, beautifully smooth paper surface I have yet encountered, and the lack of tooth is something I depend upon in order to achieve tiny, intricate details. However, this paper is TOO smooth for colored pencils. I could not get the depth of color on the oranges that I wanted (the scan honestly looks closer to what I had wanted than the original, which is a tiny bit more washed out on the colors). It would be impossible to layer the colors like I normally am want to do.

I expect that this paper will work much better for my inkwork. It was, after all, labeled for use with watercolors, not pencils. I also intend to experiment with the use of graphite on it, as my sketch marks showed up amazingly clear and were still very easy to erase completely.Date: 03 September 2010

He was born in April of 1995 at Mission Wolf-- he along with his siblings have all lived out their lives at the sanctuary. He has always been a confident wolf --strong and intense. Not accepting of too many people --Mowgli spends his time in a large natural habitat with his female companion, Spirit. Spirit was a rescue. Mowgli Lived for a time with his siblings but grew up to be an alpha personality which conflicted with his siblings needs to also be alpha. (In the wild they can get away from one another and often choose to disperse. In captivity however they can't so it's up to people to interpret before a wolf gets hurt or killed.) As they age they began to slow down. Mowgli is still staying strong even as some of his siblings are showing their age and have cancer or passed on. In the wild wolves are lucky to live 8-9 years. At the sanctuary here we have had wolves live to be 18 years old. And unfortunately cancer is the biggest culprit and contributer of death to captive wolves living longer than 10. As Mowgli enters his senior years he is doing it with grace and attitude. Who knows maybe he will live to be 19 or 20 even."
-Tracy Anne Brooks of Mission Wolf

The Art
Colored pencil on white paper.
The final composition is 6"x11" on 11"x14" paper.
~12 hours of time.
Reference: [link] "Mowgli" by ~Wolf-of-Samhain
Date: 03 September 2010
