Fine Art Still Life Work in Progress

Sunflowers In Daylight

This is a back-dated post for my archive project, where I am copying over every piece of art I have ever submitted to DeviantArt, with the original submission date or watermarked year stamp, so a complete archive of my work can be found on this website, even if the item was never or is no longer displayed in my portfolios.

Originally posted June 8, 2009. WIP images were originally posted on March 10, April 1, and April 3, 2009.

I decided not to do any more painting on this piece, signed it, and am making a final submission. Nothing has changed from WIP3.

This painting follows the technique my instructor is attempting to impart to the class – blocking and layering. This is one of those techniques developed for oil painting, but perfect for acrylics, the reason being that the acrylic painter can add a new layer in 10-30 minutes, while the oil painter must wait 2-14 days. The potential for depth to the finished painting is astounding. The time it takes to finish a piece is painful, especially when the class ends in a couple months.

Three layers of paint at this point, and it still looks like something I might have scrawled out when I was in kindergarden.

It will get better. I promise.

The latest layer is additional detail to the shading and shapes of the petals. I didn’t use any medium with the paint, so it is taking a full week to dry.

I’m sick of painting these sunflowers, so I’m not putting my usually detail into the painting. I think it’s going to come out much more impressionistic than I am fond of, but at this point I just want to finish it and walk away.

I painted over the background, smoothing and lightening it as per my instructor’s request. I like the style of background I had before, but I am trying to follow his suggestions. If you have any particular opinion regarding which you like better, please let me know. I’m tempted to paint it back to the more varied background after the piece is graded.

The only other change I made was adding a very light glazing layer of white as highlights on the petals. It really added a lot to the depth of the piece, but my camera seems completely incapable of picking up that color.
