Copper Wire Circlets
So, I tried my hand at bent copper wire circlets as a surprise for Diana a couple days ago.  The three-strand is my first attempt, lightly beaten with a chasing hammer on a jewelry anvil to slightly temper the wire and set the loops at the back.  I didn’t realize until after it was finished that the wire has a clear plastic(?) coating on it, which is now flaking and seems impossible to cleanly remove, making the color splotchy.  Still, I’m very happy with it as a first attempt.
Having learned about the coating from the first attempt, before starting on the second circlet I sanded the wire first with sandpaper. Â I will need to pick up some steel wool to make the job easier on future items. Â Anyway, it’s two twisted wires, lightly cold tempered with a chasing hammer and jewelry anvil. Â I still didn’t manage to get the loops at the ends to look the same, but overall I am also happy with this attempt. Â Now Diana and I have circlets we can wear with our veils if we don’t want to bother with pins.
These were actually much faster and easier to make than I was expecting.  I think I spent only about a half hour on the two-strand circlet, so I’m strongly contemplating making a bunch of these as largess for the SCA, and I think if I could get together enough equipment for people to borrow they would be practical to offer as a workshop class at SCA events.
Don’t worry about the clear plastic coating. If anyone notices it, just tell them you left it on purpose.
It’s kinda obvious it’s not on purpose, and it’s flaking now, so it’s really not ideal that it’s there. At the same time, I’m not worrying about it because it was my first try, and it would be ridiculous of me to expect my first try to come out perfect. ;) It’s still usable over a veil, but if it were to be worn directly against the hair it would catch and pull A LOT.
