Vigil (New Art)
I’m still a bit shocked with myself that I actually made a finished art piece! And it even included a background!
The drawing was made with a Derwent Chinese White pencil on a 9″x12″ piece of black paper. It took about six hours to finish.
Vigil was inspired by a photo of a Gallos, a bronze statue created by Rubin Eynon and installed on the cliffs of Tintagel in April of 2016. It came up as a prompt in one of my drawing groups on Facebook. I had been intending to create some non-anatomy sketches, but when I saw the photo I knew I wanted to make a finished art piece.
I’m not going to say it flowed effortlessly, or that it turned out perfect, but I am extremely happy with the final result. It turned out very well, which I wasn’t sure it would do when I started. As I wrote above, I even made a background, which if you look through my portfolio is not exactly typical. I enjoy painting landscapes, but I don’t really enjoy drawing them. However, a background was absolutely essential to get the effect I wanted in this drawing. I had the hardest time with the foreground. On the third try I finally found a texture that didn’t look confusing and horrid.
There will still be a lot of sketches in my future, but I’m very happy to actually be making art again.
