Keeping Watch

This is a back-dated post for my archive project, where I am copying over every piece of art I have ever submitted to DeviantArt, with the original submission date or watermarked year stamp, so a complete archive of my work can be found on this website.

I was away from my scanner all weekend, so I drew this instead of working on my commission.

I’d been thinking about drawing some sort of bird anthro for a while, but hadn’t gotten around to it. I decided that this was a good excuse, and gave me a subject to try drawing in full color on black paper. I wasn’t quite sure if colors other than white would show up as clearly, but I think it turned out decent.

I didn’t use any direct references for any of this image, even the wing. I think it turned out all right anyway, but it’s far from perfect.

I’m not sure if I am done with this drawing. I’m considering adding more setting/background, but I’m not sure what or how. If you have any ideas, or think I should stop here, I am interested in hearing other people’s opinions.

Current note as of posting this archive blog (8/6/2018): It seemed a bit funky to me when I created it, but at the time I couldn’t figure out what was wrong.  Looking back at it now, I can very clearly see that much of the problem lays in the positioning of the wings.  When working this heavily black, I have to be extremely precise with the placement of light and positioning of figures in order for them to make sense.  I was intending for it to look like he was laying on his belly on a dock or platform.  Due to the angle of the wings, it looks like he should be crouching or standing, which doesn’t make any sense given the placement of the platform.  Hence, it becomes hard to figure out what exactly is going on here.
