To paint this I first did an underpainting of black and let it dry, so there would be no risk of unwanted white showing through. The painting itself was created by applying a thin layer of black paint to the entire canvas, and then adding in white while the black was wet and blending the softer gray areas. No medium was used. I expect this painting to take about three weeks to dry completely before I can varnish it.
