Complete Contentment - WIP 10

I worked on two paintings tonight.  One is a continuation of the Diana Portraits project, where I laid down a second underpainting layer on a new test portrait.  It’s just a field of olivy green, so it’s not really interesting enough to post a photo of that one.  The other painting I worked on was the Complete Contentment Celtic piece, which is finally nearing completion.  I think it just needs some more treatment on the outer edge.

On this layer (actually done in two sittings), I painted the dark brown border around the knotwork, and went over the outside edge with an opaque orange paint to hide some smudging. It will probably need another layer around the outside, as well as some other edge treatment, but it’s nearly finished.
For the record, I cannot for the life of me take true photos of the colors of my paintings at night in my home. This is not actually solid orange. :/

Samhain Candles - WIP 5

On the evening of Tuesday, the 23rd of October, 2012, I did a bit more work on two oil paintings.

Mermaid Drowning Cover - WIP 9

12″x16″ oil paint on Gessobord
For this layer I added more detail to the clouds, and the surf. I also removed the masking tape. I think I may have put too much yellow into the sea foam, so I’ll likely be adding just a bit more paint there on the next sitting. Otherwise, it’s just the female figure.

I painted the shadow areas of the objects with an opaque black paint, and added lighting detail. There is also another layer of paint on the top of the candle and the flame, and some slight highlighting on the pumpkins.

Mermaid Drowning Cover Art - WIP 8

On Tuesday, the 16th of October 2012, I worked on one painting, the cover art for Mermaid Drowning.

At least two more layers to go. It needs more detail in the clouds, and a LOT more detail in the ocean. Then it’s on to the human subject.

Samhain Candles - WIP 4

On the evening of October 8, 2012 I worked on two oil paintings.  I added another layer to the book cover for Mermaid Drowning, and I resumed work on the Samhain Candles still life.  I hope to have both paintings finished before the end of the month.

2 sittings
For this layer I added only black and white paint, which I used to lighten the color of the sand and reduce the yellow tint. I also added stronger shading in the sand and the rocks.

5 Sittings, including the underpainting layer.
My apologies that the photo is a bit too yellow.
On this layer I painted in the subjects. It’s mostly flat black, but I did paint wet-on-wet to add details where a lot of lighting was needed. I am not expecting to do anything else major to the reflection images, but I will be laying down at least one more layer of black paint to the objects, and adding more highlighting details. The white paint I used is very low pigment load, so I also expect the bright white areas to be less brilliant when the paint is dry.

Complete Contentment - WIP9

Wonder of wonders, on Thursday the 4th of October I finally sat down and got out my oil paints for the first time since moving to Las Vegas.  The transition has been a difficult one for me, and my health problems continue to have a tremendous impact on my ability to work.  With a little luck and a lot of determination, I hope to put out artwork and sewing at a more consistent pace.  Thank you for staying with me during this difficult time.

The main purpose of getting out the paints was to work on the cover art for Mermaid Drowning, which must be finished before the end of October.  While I had the paints out, I also worked on a couple other things.  Primarily, I spent time adding shading to Complete Contentment, but I also put down an underpainting layer for another color/style test for the commissioned family portraits I started last winter.

Mermaid Drowning - WIP 6

My parents are preparing to publish their very first novel, and I am creating the cover art for them.  The title of the novel is Mermaid Drowning.  The cover art depicts the main character, Evelyn, watching the sunset at the beach with a storm looming on the horizon.

Sketch 2 for the book cover of Mermaid Drowning. They decided they wanted her to be wearing completely different clothing. Aside from the horizon line, the straight lines are all there to help me lay out the composition appropriately for a book cover.

To transfer the details of the concept sketch I used carbon paper and traced the sketch using a the tip of a paintbrush.

I masked out the central figure so I can seamlessly paint in the background around her. I also masked off the horizon line so I can underpaint a clean and straight horizon. I used ordinary painter’s masking tape of the kind you find at any hardware store.

The central figure is currently masked out with normal blue masking tape so I can seamlessly paint in the background around her. I also masked out the horizon line before laying down the underpainting for the ocean, but I had removed the tape while painting so I could paint the rock on the right. I’ll be painting the ocean, waves, and sky all in the same sitting so they will accurately show the same colors. The underpainting will help to give the ocean depth beyond the sky colors it reflects.

Butterfly - WIP 1

6″x9″ colored pencil on black paper
This is for the July CPM challenge: http://coloredpencilmagazine.blogspot.com/2012/08/july-art-challenge-winners.html

This is, quite literally, the first time I have gotten out my full set of colored pencils in well over a year. I’m a little rusty, but the subject matter is very pleasant for reviving those skills. Whenever a take an extended hiatus from a particular medium or style, it usually doesn’t take very long to get back up to speed.

Dr. Who and Dalek - WIP 1

Hello folks!  These are two pairs of miniature paintings, commissioned at Clockwork Alchemy, which I will be putting in lockets as soon as they are approved by my customers.  All four are slightly more than 1″ tall, drawn with a dip pen nib and then painted in an ink wash of the same color.

Regency Corset - Finished Outside

“8″ is in quotes because all told this is less than a day’s work, but it happened in very inefficient mini sewing sessions over the past couple weeks.  There were several days when all intentions of sewing were thwarted.

So, at this point the corset is technically finished.  It is entirely sewn and grommeted.  The only detail left is the period fan lacing, and then I will be making the chemise and bodiced petticoat to go with it.

The top edge was trimmed and edged, as described in How to Edge a Corset and, because of the shoulder straps, How to Edge Around Tabs.

The next step was to add the bust ribbon, a small silk taffeta ribbon along the front of the bust which can be tightened to cinch in the top of the bust slightly, or just tied into a nice little bow for decoration.

I edged the entire top edge of the corset before adding the bust ribbon so the ribbon would not create friction and potentially fray the raw edge of the corset inside the edging.  It also means the bust ribbon can be removed without causing any harm to the corset.

Regency Corset - Assembly 50

My edging ribbon is not quite wide enough to cover the existing edging, so I stitched to lengths of ribbon edge to edge.

I needed to leave a small hole at the center of the bust where the silk ribbon emerges, so, following the same procedure as for normal edging, I started just to the side of center and stitched until I was at the side seam.  Roughly one inch of edging ribbon is left loose at the outer edge.

Regency Corset - Assembly 52

I then repeated the procedure on the other side, leaving a hole about 1/4″ wide.  Here, the two silk taffeta bust ribbons are threaded through the hole.

Regency Corset - Assembly 53

To secure the outer end of the bust ribbon, I stitched it to the loose end of the edging ribbon.  I used a zig-zag stitch and went back and forth several times to make sure it will hold.

This photo shows the silk bust ribbon stitched to the cotton edging ribbon.

The new layer of edging ribbon is finished exactly the same as normal edging, but I had to be careful not to catch the silk bust ribbon in the stitching.  The outer ends are folded under, but not stitched.  That way if the bust ribbon needs to be replaced, new ribbon may be threaded in from the armpit area and secured by hand.

This photo shows the bust ribbon pulled slightly, so there is some gathering along the top edge.

After that, I grommeted the shoulder straps and the back edges.  The shoulder straps are smaller grommets than the back edge.

Steampunk-Meme Minimalist Paintings - Group1 - WIP7

Over the past two days I’ve been working on a batch of eight textured acrylic mini canvas board minimalist paintings (For being minimalist, the description sure is a mouth-full!).  They are mostly on 3″x5″ canvas board, with one 4″x5″ and one 5″x7″.  This entry shows the WIP photos I took along the way as I created layers, starting from the initial texture layer where the pencil marks are still visible.  During painting I discovered that none of my oranges or yellows are opaque enough to cover pencil, so in the future I know to start with a layer of white if I intend to have a base color in one of those shades.

At this point they are signed and finished, although a couple of them were still drying when I took the above photo.  I’ll take nice photos of them when the weather outside allows, which will hopefully be tomorrow.  The texturing on the paintings makes them problematic to photograph indoors with artificial lighting.
