Art – Seashell by the Sea – WIP

This is a back-dated post for my archive project, where I am copying over every piece of art I have ever submitted to DeviantArt, with the original submission date or watermarked year stamp, so a complete archive of my work can be found on this website, even if the item was never or is no longer displayed in my portfolios.

Note from 7/30/2019: This was a class assignment, and the further I got into detailing in the shell, the more disinterested in the piece I became. My teacher was willing to grade the piece before it was completely finished, but I hate leaving projects unfinished, so I did a bit more before I stopped entirely. It’s unlikely I’ll ever return to finish it.

Class Project

It’s a sea shell. I’m adding a beach scene around it (the green will later become water). The shell is only basically shaded in. I will be adding much more detail.

Added texture to the beach.

I altered the texture of the beach more. It’s a bit better, but I’m still not sure I like it.

I also added the sea foam. I don’t think it’s too awful for my first time painting sea foam, and complete inability to find a photo of sea foam taken from beach level. Now that it’s on the painting, there are some rather obvious perspective problems. In an odd sort of way, the sea foam as it is makes the shell look absolutely, monstrously huge! At this time I’m not sure if I am going to ignore those issues, or adjust the sea foam.

I altered the line of the sea foam in an attempt to correct some of the perspective issues. It’s still not perfect, but I doubt I will return to that aspect of the painting.

I also started painting in more of the texture on the shell. There’s still a lot of work to do in this area.
