Art – Celtic Dragon

This is a back-dated post for my archive project, where I am copying over every piece of art I have ever submitted to DeviantArt, with the original submission date or watermarked year stamp, so a complete archive of my work can be found on this website, even if the item was never or is no longer displayed in my portfolios.

Originally posted on November 3, 2009. WIP images originally posted on September 23, September 24, October 15, and October 18, 2009.

I still need to apply a layer of varnish, but this is the final image. All I added from WIP4 was some black paint on the raised knot outlines, to make them more distinct.

This is an experiment of sorts. I’d like to see how it works to paint Celtic knotwork and give it depth, so I created a mixture of wax medium, a little drying medium, and a little black paint. I put that in a hand-made paper piping bag, piped it onto the canvas, and manipulated it with a palette knife. I’ll need to use this technique enough times to feel somewhat confident about it before deciding if it’s rubbish or not. So far I feel so cludgy that I might as well be finger painting. By the time I ran out of my mixture and decided to call it a night, I felt like it was starting to look remotely decent.

I’m planning to add multiple layers of translucent color. We’ll see how it turns out at the end.

This is an experiment of sorts. I’d like to see how it works to paint Celtic knotwork and give it depth, so I created a mixture of cold wax medium, a little drying medium, and a little black paint. I put that in a hand-made paper piping bag, piped it onto the canvas, and manipulated it with a palette knife. I’ll need to use this technique enough times to feel somewhat confident about it before deciding if it’s rubbish or not. So far I feel like it was starting to look remotely decent, but nowhere near as clean as I like.

I’m planning to add multiple layers of translucent color. We’ll see how it turns out at the end.

Needs a lot more work. One layer of color.

On this layer I added a light glaze of blue paint at accent points of the dragon to add to the color depth. I also went over the entire background with a glaze of raspberry-colored paint. Both colors were very diluted with medium to make them translucent.
