Book Reviews The Balancing Path (prose) Witchcraft

Book Review – Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft by Laura Tempest Zakroff

I literally cannot recommend this book enough. Since I first cracked open Weave the Liminal and started reading it, I have recommended it at every opportunity. I may have needed to finish reading it to write a honest review, but I didn’t need to finish it to know that it was a treasure for anyone seeking to explore their own personal witchy/occult/spiritual path.

Laura starts with the premise that no two people have the same path, and never fails to reaffirm the notion at every opportunity. Rather than laying out a set of rules and specific steps one should follow to become a “true witch”, she clearly defines her words and terms, gives social and historic context, philosophy, and her personal experiences, and prompts the reader with questions and ideas for them to explore and find their own best path. At every step she uses anecdotes, history, and observation to encourage the reader to better understand their own grasp of their path and how they relate to the world at large, whether that path is very similar or drastically different from her own.

I truly believe anyone can find value to be found within the pages of Weave the Liminal, regardless of what path you walk, how new or young you are, or how old or accomplished you are. The hardest part is having the courage to lay yourself bare and be completely honest with yourself about yourself, your biases, and how you see and interact with the world. That kind of introspection can be incredibly intimidating because it is often much easier to ignore difficult, painful, or problematic aspects of ourselves, but introspection is also absolutely essential to be your truest self, whether or not you walk a witchy path. This book will demystify that process from the perspective of the witch, and guide you through it. Since this is also a never-ending process, I have no doubt each read through will always open new avenues of exploration.

Whether Tempest is addressing what it means to be a witch (and why the answer is different for every person), describing how to lay the foundation for a strong personal path, explaining the myriad ways magic and myth and various tools and methods can impact our lives and experiences, describing her understanding of the divine and liminal, or giving very no-nonsense advice about navigating community and society, she does it from a place of humility and wisdom we can all learn from.

Seriously! Go buy a copy of Weave the Liminal, and even if it takes you a while, read it cover to cover at least once.
